Thinking Aloud: The Stimulus Programs Pinoy Style
Whats the big deal about the economic stimulus program that GMA and her minions are pushing? We are amidst a financial crisis and the people are weary that the stimulus plans (or what people are fond of calling it now “stealmulus”) have a hidden motive.
Filipinos have a culture of mistrust against government officials and that a plan to procure funds from GSIS and SSS is not a funny joke. The working class toil and break their backs to hopefully retire with enough money to last until their death. Again the culture of mistrust prevails because of all the scandals the Arroyo administration have shown the weary, tired and sick eyes of the Filipino people. ZTE scandal, Jose Pidal scandal and a slew of other scandals have rocked the nation to the core and a stimulus scandal is not a feasible future for us.
I’m not an economic expert but the idea of paying SSS or GSIS hundreds of pesos a month in contribution, then the government using it as stimulus and then the government pays it with interest is really a sweet deal. Who pays then? The government would probably pay it from the taxes. In a wild merry go round, who pays the taxes? Isn’t it that the SSS and GSIS contributors also pay their taxes thus making them pay for what was borrowed from them.
Conspiracy theories aside GMA’s term is at its end and I’m sure that the people are really afraid that the stimulus fund would become GMA’s retirement fund. There are only four factors that contribute to the peoples lack of support for GMA’s plan:
1. Her term is about to end. Would her successor be up to the task of continuing with her plans?
2. The lack of transparency in almost all of the governments financial dealings.
3. People feel that GMA and money is really a bad combination.
4. Who trusts “Mrs I will not run in the 2004 elections”?
